Elsie Rheta (Shaffer) Haubert, 81 of New Cumberland passed away on December 5, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 17, 1937 in Freeburg, PA, she was the daughter of Elwood P. and Helen (Sierer) Shaffer. Elsie graduated from Enola High School in 1955 where she was the president of her class, played field hockey, and was a majorette.

She was employed in New Cumberland, PA at Harrisburg Jet Center, Clark Aviation, West Shore Aviation, and The West Shore… Read More » Senior Citizens Center. She also worked at Sylvania Electronics in Montoursville, PA and Long Island, NY, and Shull’s Bakery, in Marysville, PA. Elsie was a member of Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church in New Cumberland, PA where she was active in the United Methodist Women, taught Sunday school, and led youth fellowship.

She was also a member of the Soroptimist International of the West Shore. She was a PIAA field hockey referee and volunteered at the following: Cub Scout den leader, Girl Scout troop leader, Hillside Elementary School library, The Bridge, Neighborhood Center, and Downtown Daily Bread. She went on mission trips to Sierra Leone, West Africa, the Czech Republic, and helped with Katrina relief.

Elsie enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle, reading, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Elsie is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Paul W. Haubert, son, Wayne (Melissa) Haubert, daughters, Sheri (Jim) McLaughlin, and Karen (Kevin) McCauley all of New Cumberland, PA; siblings, Sandra Newmyer of Mechanicsburg, PA, David Shaffer of Carlisle, PA, and Donella Shaffer of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren, Katelyn & Kelsey McCauley, Jacob & Joshua McLaughlin, and Wesley Haubert. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care & Hospice for their loving compassion and care of Elsie.

A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held at Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 11:00 am with the Rev. Dr. Deborah Heisley-Cato officiating. A visitation with Elsie’s family will be held at the church starting at 9:00 am until the start of the service.
