Emily Bell Ascue, 87, of Bluefield, Virginia passed away Monday, May 13th, 2019. Born on May 15th, 1931 in Johnson City, Tennessee she was as sweet as the candy she loved to eat and the pies she made often. She was preceded in death by her mother, Emily Jones Bell Mitchell; father, Walker Hamner Bell; step father, Thomas Mitchell; husband, Joe Henry Ascue; her sisters, Lucy Carolynne Bell, Betty Bell Eley and Helen Louise Bell; as well as brothers-in- law Carlos Ferrell and Thomas Stuart Eley Jr
She leaves a grieving family of sister, Phyllis Bell Ferrell; children, Joseph Thomas Ascue, Alvin Walker Ascue (Donna), and Kimberly Ascue Shaw; grandchildren, Kimberly Ascue, Christopher Ascue, Nicolas Shaw (Emily) and Logan Ascue; nieces, Cynthia Eley Stalnaker(Glenver) and Sharon Eley Fogarty (James); and great nephew Thomas James Fogarty. Emily was a loving and devoted mother, sister, and friend to everyone she came in contact with. She was an incredibly strong woman, especially while her husband was held captive as a prisoner of war for almost 3 years.
She raised 3 children and at the age of 47, started again by raising her first granddaughter. To call her selfless would be an understatement. She was also fiercely independent and determined.
You would often find her mowing her yard or shoveling snow well into her later years when she shouldn’t have been. She had a passion for gardening, the flowers and trees in her yard were always as beautiful as she was. She also loved baking as much as everyone that received her special treats.
Her special kitty friends Socks and Marley are lost without her as well as all of her other furry great grandchildren that she loved sneaking food to. Her loss is immeasurable for those who knew and loved her. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 16th, 2019 at 3:00pm at Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with her long time neighbor Rev.
Larry Ramey officiating as well as musical offerings from James Hampton rendering vocals and Kim Bowman Smith accompanying on piano. The family will receive friends at the Chapel on Thursday from 2:00pm until the service hour. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley.
Pallbearers will be: Chris Ascue, Nic Shaw, Logan Ascue, Blair Allen, Tommy Fogarty, Victor Farmer, Gary Green, Roger Martin, and Rick Anderson.
