Emma L. Matherly Smiddy, 94, of Terre Haute passed away Thursday February 14, 2019 at 10:00 am in Signature Healthcare. She had retired from CBS and had also worker at Quaker Maid and Countryside Nursing Center. She was born February 14, 1925 in East Alton, IL to Grover Armstrong and Fannie (Moore) Armstrong.

Emma is survived by her daughter, Sally Mowell (Ken) of West Alexandria, OH; sons, John Matherly (Shirley) and William “Bill” Matherly both of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Alex Matherly, Matthew Mowell, Lance Mowell, and Justin Matherly; great-grandchildren, Silas, Sidney, Taylor, Skylin, Conner, Jayce, Blake, and Zane; a sister, Mary Gardner of Ft. Wayne; a brother, Donald Armstrong of Terre Haute and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John R. Matherly; her second husband, William Smiddy and two sisters and eight brothers.

Emma was the 9th of 13 children. She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle and she loved to read and write poetry and write songs. Visitation will be Monday February 18, 2019 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Pastor Tony Corey officiating.

Private family burial will be at a later date in Highland Lawn Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association www. alz.org.
