Erasmus Roy Childers, Jr., passed away on October 11, 2018. A native of Selma, Roy was born on March 17, 1925 to Margaret Miller Childers and Erasmus Roy Childers, Sr He graduated Parrish High School and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute from 1942-1943 when he enlisted and served as a pilot in the US Air Force.

After WWII, he returned to Auburn and was a member of the Nu Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order. Roy graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1948. He remained in the inactive Air Force reserve until 1954.

Roy married Elizabeth Bebe Skinner in 1956 and they moved to the family’s farm in Wilcox County to make their home there. He was a leader in the Wilcox County Cattleman’s Association and the Wilcox County Farm Bureau. He was named “Tree Farmer of the Year” in 1999 by the Alabama Forestry Association.

The farm is designated as a Treasure Farm. Roy was one of the founding members of the Catherine Academy board of directors and served the school for more than a decade. Roy was Chairman of the Wilcox County Republican Committee from 1964 to 1988.

He also served on the State Republican Executive Committee for over 50 years. His most recent service was on the State Health Coordinating Council. Roy was a member of Camden Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder.

He was also an accomplished artist having shown in galleries throughout the state and loved sharing his passion with others. Roy is survived by his two children: Nancy Duggan Childers Lansing (John) of Atlanta and Marcus Skinner Childers (Margaret) of Mobile; and five grandchildren: Madeline Miller Lansing, John Childers Lansing, Elizabeth Dozier Lansing, Bebe Hollinger Childers and Margaret Skinner Childers. Visitation will take place Saturday, October 20, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma at 12:30 and the Memorial Service will follow in the sanctuary at 1:30.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camden Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (P.O.Box 971, Camden, AL 36726) or Wilmer Hall Children’s Home (3811 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608) or Selma Art Guild (508 Selma Ave. , Selma, AL 36701).
