Ethelyn “Lyn”‘s Obituary Ethelyn “Lyn” Alta Shippey, age 92, passed from this life on May 21, 2019 in Ft. Worth, TX. Services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church in Childress, Tx.

with Terrry Williams officiating. Burial will take place in the Northfield Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Ethelyn was born on March 6, 1927 in Childress, TX to Robert and Alta (Timmons) Elliott.

Her great-grandparents, the Elliott’s, took a wagon train from Indiana and Missouri and the Timmons family was from Kentucky. She graduated from Tell High School at the age of 16 and then attended West Texas A&M for two years. She then enrolled at St. Anthony’s Nursing School in Amarillo, Texas where she was capped as a nurse in the spring of 1947.

Ethelyn had planned to go into medicine, but upon meeting her husband James G. Shippey, Jr, she changed her plans. Once married on March 29, 1947, they moved to San Diego, CA for his service duty and all three children were born there – James, Deborah and Marilyn. James and Ethelyn were married for 67 years.

Following his service duty in San Diego, they moved to several different places – Sunnyvale, CA, then to Oahu, HI, on to Albuquerque, NM, followed by Guam, Corpus Christi, TX, San Jose and San Diego, CA, and finally resided in Fort Worth. Over the course of her life, she became a well-travelled person. During her travels, Ethelyn degreed in Education at Texas A&M in Corpus Christi.

She went on to obtain her Masters in Education at San Jose State University, and her Doctorate in Education from the University of San Diego. As an educator, she developed her PIRK Reading Program for children with special needs and reading difficulties. She was a very successful educator and was listed in the Who’s Who in Education.

Despite all the degrees she had and the life experiences that she had over her 92 years, her greatest accomplishment was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They loved her dearly, and she will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and all of her family. Ethelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband James G. Shippey Jr., brothers J.D. Elliott and R.C. Elliott, sister-in-law Earline Elliott, and nephew Ronnie Elliott.

Survivors include son, James Robert Shippey and wife, Sandra of San Diego, CA; 2 daughters, Deborah Shippey Meyer and husband, Robert Meyer of Keller, TX, and Marilyn Shippey Buron and husband, John Thomas Buron of San Diego, CA; Grandchildren, Jason Meyer, Charity York, Amity Robbins, John Paul Meyer, Michael Ozols, Sara Olson, Brian Ozols, John Joseph Buron and Matthew Shippey; 23 great grandchildren; Nephews, Larry Elliott, Robert Elliott, Rick Elliott and Randall Elliott; Nieces, Marcell Mullins, Mary Jane Moseley, Cheryl Talbert, Kate King and Linda Morgan; and numerous extended family.
