Funeral service for Eugene P. “Gene” Shelton, age 83, of Decatur, will be Monday, May 13, 2019, 3:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Benny Sivley officiating. The family will receive friends for three hours prior to service.

Interment will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. Mr. Shelton, who died Friday, May 10, 2019, at his residence, was born February 14, 1936, in Decatur, to Homer Frank Shelton and Mary Lucille Hilliard Shelton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Ruth Hill Shelton, and his sister, Thelma Lorene Shelton.

For many years, Gene, along with his father, operated Shelton Home Furnishings in Decatur. He served as Morgan County Coroner for 16 years, and was a member of Decatur Baptist Church. As co-owner and manager of Shelton Funeral Home for 47 years, he was well known for his compassion and care for families as well as the community.

He was a devoted father, grandfather (“Grandy”), and great-grandfather. He is survived by one son, Sam Shelton (Laura) of Pell City; two daughters, Susan Shelton Hines (Tom) of Hartselle and Sherre Shelton McKelvey (Greg) of Tuscaloosa; two stepsons, Robert A. Doherty (Lisa) of Decatur, and James M. Doherty (Monica) of Decatur; one brother, Kenneth Shelton, Sr. (Vicki) of Decatur; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Gideons International Bibles, P. O. Box 5111, Decatur, AL 35601.
