OBITUARY Frances Mildred Reid “Aunt Mildred” February 20, 1920 – November 11, 2018 Frances Mildred Reid, age 98, died November 11, 2018 after a lifetime of service to her family. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, and was the daughter of John C. Reid, Sr. and Willie Kuykendal Reid. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Reid Neely and her sister’s husband, Thomas Lee Neely, and her brother, John Calvin Reid, Jr. and his wife, Bernyce.

Mildred is survived by two nieces, Mary Neely Clayton of Charlotte and Joyce Reid Pearson of Gainesville, Florida; one nephew, Calvin L. Reid of Potomac, Maryland; along with two-great nieces and four-great nephews. During the years following her retirement from the business world, Mildred lovingly assisted with the special care of her great niece, her “precious”, Jenna Grace Clayton. Mildred was a lifelong member of her beloved Providence Presbyterian Church, and was active there for more than 50 years.

She was an Elder in the Church, and it brought many wonderful memories to her and her family. Although modest about it, Mildred was an early businesswoman and dedicated community volunteer. Immediately upon graduation from business school, she went to work as a legal secretary in a local law firm and followed this with a term as Administrative Assistant to Federal Judge J. Spencer Bell.

Upon his death, Mildred went on to work for First Union National Bank in the Trust Department. Through her involvement at the bank, Mildred began a number of community and professional activities where she remained active until age and mobility became a factor. These activities included ABWA, Altrusa, the National Association of Bank Women, First Union’s Management Association and the Salvation Army’s Auxiliary.

Later, Mildred served as a dedicated volunteer for Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte where she received their Silver Award for “Appreciation for Dedication and Gift of Time to the Center and This Community”. Mildred epitomized a wonderful and caring person, especially when it came to being a caregiver for her family. She cared for her parents until their death, her sister until her death, and she focused much of the last 20 years on her beloved Jenna, her great-niece who was indeed the light of her life for so many reasons.

Memorial services will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church on December 12th at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to the Church; to the Allegro Foundation Charlotte; or Misty Meadows Farms in Waxhaw.
