OBITUARY Francis Lawrence Magill August 13, 1928 – November 15, 2018 Play Tribute Movie Mr. Francis Lawrence Magill, age 90, of Douglasville, Georgia, formerly of Lurgan, Ireland, Middletown, New York and Douglasville, Georgia, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Thursday, November 15, 2018. He was born August 13, 1928 in Lurgan, County Armaugh, Ireland. Francis was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Peggy Marie Coker Magill; his parents, Charles James Magill and Susan Molloy Magill; a sister, Maureen Magill Horton; brothers, Thomas James Magill (a severely wounded WWII US Marine and Iwo Jima survivor) and Joseph Magill.

A sister, Theresa Magill Barry, resides in North Hollywood, California. Francis was a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major with 30 years of service. Francis initially was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division and The Army Security Agency Vint Hill Farms, Virginia, prior to serving with Headquarters, USAREUR and the 1st Infantry Division in Europe in late 1940.

Francis returned to the United States and shortly thereafter was sent overseas to Korea after returning to the United States. Francis was assigned to Headquarters USACIC, Fort Holabird, Maryland prior to returning to Europe as Special Weapons Operations Sergeant, Seventh Army Headquarters Europe. Francis held many sensitive security clearances up to Top Secret and other more sensitive clearances necessitated by type duties.

Upon return to the United States, Francis was assigned to the Intelligence and Security Office of the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency, Huntsville, Alabama before NASA was formed receiving special recognition for special investigations completed during his tour there. Francis continued his Army service in Alaska and assignments in Southern California providing supervision to Army Overseas Radio, Military Police and Engineer Unites of Sixth U.S. Army. Francis received orders for assignment to the 11th Airborne Division (TEST) and 1st Cavalry Division preparing for overseas movement to Vietnam.

Francis remained in Vietnam during 1965-66 with the 1st Cavalry Division and served subsequent tours in Vietnam with the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, SUARV Adjutant General Casualty Branch, and Sergeant Major 101st Airborne Division, 101st AVN Group from 1967 to 1970. Francis retired from the U.S. Army in January 1971 after recall to active duty. Sergeant Major Magill was cited in Alaska and Fort Stewart, Georgia for his ability to execute many operations normally assigned to field grade officers through Lt.

Col retiring in 1972. Francis was awarded 5 Bronze Stars, 6 Commendation Ribbons, The Purple Heart, Air Medals and a “V” for Valor and many other decorations during his years of service. Francis is of the Catholic Faith and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Carrollton, Georgia.

Francis was a Boy Scout Leader in Alaska and Georgia and was a Scout Commissioner. Francis also belonged to many civic organizations, such as Boy Scouts of America, both in Alaska and Georgia, and also as a Scout Commissioner, PTA Coordinator in Alaskan schools and together with his wife, Teenage Coordinator and Little League Activities Director. Francis was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Vallejo, California and Douglasville Georgia, and Knights of Columbus Teenage Activity Support.

Francis is survived by his sons, Barry, Michael, Kevin and Patrick; and a daughter, Ella Raiden; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, November 19, 2018 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. A service will follow at 1:00 PM in the Rosehaven Chapel.

Interment will be Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Andersonville National Cemetery, 760 POW Road, Andersonville, GA 31711.
