Frank Friend, 90, of Troy died March 11, 2019 at Hospice of North Idaho in Coeur d’Alene, following a severe fracture to his left femur while at home on February 25. Frank was born December 10, 1928, in Washington, Pennsylvania and raised in north central Ohio. In 1951 he married, Lucy (von Wantoch) Wallasch, in Homerville, Ohio.

They had two boys: Miles and Wayne. He retired in 1984 as a Journeyman Millwright at Ford Engine Plant in Brook Park, Ohio. In 1985 he and Lucy moved to Pine Creek Road, northwest of Troy, to be closer to the boys.

He relished the abundant wildlife that frequented their Pine Creek property. Despite a crippled left leg, Frank was no stranger to adventurous mountain hikes. He told tails of being chased by moose and once had to use his walking stick to fend off an attacking mountain lion.

He carved a scene on the stick, inscribed a description of the event, and dubbed it his “counting coup on a lion” stick. He was an expert wood carver and enjoyed carving a large variety of miniature animals from a single block of wood. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy, parents Frank Sr. and Lorretta Friend, brother David, sister Joyce, and granddaughter Ashley.

Survivors include brothers William Friend, Karl Friend, and sister Linda Wade; sons Miles and Wayne (wife LaVonne), and grandson Steven (wife Cassie). Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Yaak Community Church. Arrangements are by Schnackenberg Funeral Home in Libby.
