OBITUARY Gary Arthur Schwede July 21, 1939 – September 19, 2018 Gary Arthur Schwede, of Canton, Michigan, was born July 21, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Edgar and Margaetha Schwede. He was the only boy of 4 children. Gary passed away on Wednesday September 19, 2018, in Troy, Michigan at the age of 79.

Gary was the beloved husband of the late Carolyn Schwede and formerly of the late Mary Schwede. He was the loving dad of David F. Schwede and Christine Nofz; Dear brother of Barbara Layer, sister Caroll Bortles and sister Darlene Maze; Fun-loving grandpa of James Schwede, Christine Schwede, Jason Keene, Shelley Keene and Percilla Rutledge. Gary will also be missed by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and friends.

Gary worked as a Hi-Lo Driver for General Motors in Warren for 46 happy years until he retired. To his co-workers, he was known as “Smiley”. In his leisure time, Gary enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, making candles and playing with his beloved dog “Daisy”.

He was known to take homemade desserts to area restaurants to compare recipes. His holiday desserts were famous, especially his cheesecake, peach pie and cranberry jello. Gary could grow “anything”.

His green-thumb was unstoppable. His yard was always filled with seasonal flowers that he would give away and start over. His neighbors will testify that his lawn was always impeccable.

Gary was a true sports fan, who was loyal to his Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and University of Michigan Wolverines. Gary also had fun belonging to a CB club. However, his passion was his family.

He simply loved being a husband, dad, brother, grandpa, and great-grandpa. Gary will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Gary’s family will celebrate his life with a memorial service.

The day and times will soon be announced. Gary will be laid to rest with his late wife Carolyn, in Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park Cemetery, Livonia, Michigan. Gary was generous to a fault.

He gave to every charity that asked, and more.
