Gayle Lee Slaughter, 62, a longtime resident of the Vernonia community, died Friday afternoon, February 15, 2019 at his home. GAYLE LEE SLAUGHTER was born October 22, 1956 in Roseburg, Oregon, the son of the late James Slaughter and Irene (Maxon) Slaughter. He was raised and received his early education in the Myrtle Creek community, until his teenage years, when he moved with his family to the Vernonia community.

Gayle completed his schooling in Vernonia, having been a graduate of the Vernonia High School Class of 1974. He joined the United States Army on April 7, 1978 in Portland, Oregon. Gayle served for three years, until receiving his honorable discharge on April 7, 1981, at the rank of SP4.

He served in Korea and received a badge for sharpshooting. Gayle was united on marriage to Darlena E. Flood on November 21, 1992 in Reno, Nevada. They celebrated their 26th Wedding Anniversary this past November.

Following their marriage they have made their home in the Vernonia community since. He had worked as a yarder engineer for many years in the logging industry. Gayle had worked for Big Horn Logging Company and late Holce Logging Company in Vernonia, until he became disabled in 2010.

Among his special interests, he enjoyed camping, motorcycles and caring for his dogs, “Farmer”, “Sassy”, “Dexter” and “Tazz”. Gayle also had a special love for spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Irene Slaughter; his sister,Patty Taylor and his two brothers, Bill Smith and Joe Slaughter.

Survivors include his wife, Darlena Slaughter, of the family home in Vernonia, Oregon; his mother in-law, Esther Flood, Lafayette, Oregon; his son, Jaben Slaughter, of St. Helens, Oregon; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Jailee and Doug Brossard, of Vernonia, Oregon and Brittany and Wayne Craig, of Battle Ground, Washington and his five sisters and brothers-in-law, Pam and Roy McCabe, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Wendy and Steve Ragner, of Scappoose, Oregon; Glendene and David Douglas, of Wallowa, Oregon; Jamie and Kelly Walker, of Eugene, Oregon and Carla and David Cashmere, of Veneta, Oregon. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Shandon Craig; Jori Andersen; Jessa Andersen; William Craig and McKenzie Craig and many nieces and nephews.
