Gene’s Obituary Gene A. Mathes, 76, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, February 22, 2019, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born August 19, 1942 in Iowa, the son of Phillip and Florence (Girsch) Mathes. Gene married Betty Schwake on October 1, 1966 in Waterloo.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Before his retirement, he worked for John Deere as a welder. As a hobby, in his sparetime, he made many different items from steel.

Gene is survived by his wife, Betty Mathes, of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Michelle (Tom) Finnegan, of Cedar Falls; one son, Jeff Mathes, of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Blake Mathes, Kyle and Jacob Finnegan; two brothers, John Mathes of Burlington, Iowa and Burton Mathes of Evansdale, Iowa, and four sisters, Phyllis Van Tasell of Fort Meyers, Florida, Nancy Olag of Jefferson, Missouri, Pat Kjellman of Colorado, and Becky Junkin of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Judy Mathes and Joyce Prokasko, and one brother, Don Mathes. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls.

Visitation will be 5 – 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conduted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Memorials may be directed to the family.
