George Allen Smith and KaySue Kinkaid Smith left this world on July 20, 2018, the way they wanted, together. Kay Suzan Kinkaid was born October 18, 1937 to Doug and Charlotte Kinkaid. She graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, OK in 1955, and later the University of Oklahoma where she was a Delta Gamma.
George Allen was born February 17, 1936 to Mayme Frye and Dewey Smith. For most of his life he was raised in Ponca City by his aunt and uncle, Dr. William O. (Bill) Armstrong and Harriet Armstrong. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1954 and also graduated from the University of Oklahoma where he was a Sigma Alpha Epsilon and known as “Smelly” due to his love of cologne.
It was at OU that the man known as the “Indian” caught the eye of KaySue while he was working as a house boy at the Delta Gamma house. It was here that George developed his love of serving people and clearing tables. George said he knew he loved her when on one of their dates, KaySue tripped over a rope and fell on her face, but got up laughing.
They were married on August 15, 1959 and began their journey of life and love. In 1965 they welcomed their daughter Shannon to the family and in 1970, a son, Craig. The subsequent years were filled with fun family vacations, camping, tennis, swimming, snow and water skiing and lots of kids hanging out at the Smith house.
In 2002, the Smiths welcomed “the lovely Ashley” Brown into the family and in 2005, their granddaughter Claire, the greatest joy in their life, was born. Since her birth, George and KaySue have made many, many trips to Colorado to spend time with her. As with all the Smith kids and most of the children of Ponca City, George recently taught her to drive now that she is at the ripe old age of 13.
George will be remembered for his talent of teaching, his Eskimo Joe’s cup wrapped in a paper towel with a rubber band, his devotion to his yard, his love of ice, iced tea and lots of lemon wedges, cleanliness, Shoe Goo and duct tape. KaySue will be remembered for her beautiful smile, infectious laugh, graciousness, imagination and creativity, humor, beautiful writings, thinking she was a medical doctor, mischievousness and love of April Fool’s Day. They were two individuals who were very good at being themselves, who dared to live, love and learn in their own way, and who had an overwhelming generosity and an incredible love for friends, family and strangers alike.
“Some people come and go in our lives, some stay forever”. In our hearts and through our memories we know George and KaySue will be with us forever. A memorial service will be held in the Fall.
