George Servey Jr., 86, passed away surrounded by his family at his daughters house Sunday, November 4, 2018 following an extended illness. Born October 8, 1932, in Monroe Township, George was the son of the late G. Franklin and Goldie (Henry) Servey George went to Delp School until the 6th grade when he had to go to work due to a family illness. He later entered the Army where he earned his GED and served in Germany during the Korean War.

After returning from the Army George earned a degree from Penn State as a Ferrier. He went to work for Slicker Pipe and Tool and then worked as a blacksmith for Owens Illinois for 34 years before his retirement. On December 19, 1959, George married Virginia Black who preceded him in death in 2001.

George loved to play the fiddle. He played in several groups including Keystone Pioneers for 18 years, Silver Bells and Ritzert Rounders and was inducted into the North American Fiddler’s Hall of Fame in New York. In 1991 George started playing his fiddle for patients in hospitals, several nursing homes and the Serenity Hospice House.

He continued this until 2017 when he no longer could due to his health. He also enjoyed taking treats to the doctors and nurse earning him the nicknames candy man and donut man. George also enjoyed woodworking.

George is survived by his children Donna (Mike Bell) Schreffler of Knox, John (Cheryl Rennier) Servey of Shippenville and George (Betty Hollis) Servey III of Shippenville; his grandchildren Roy Schreffler Jr. of Knox, and Kyle, Joshua and Jessica Servey all of Shippenville. Also surviving are a sister Jane Smathers, two special friends Dona Dempsey and Barb Buzard and several nieces and nephews. Along with his wife and parents George was preceded in death by his six sisters LuLu Bell Dodd, Mildred Myers, Jessie Hartzell, Edna Reinhuls, Twilia Servey and an infant sister, two brothers Ed (Leona) Servey and Harry Servey, four brothers in law Bob Dodd, Carl Myers, Mex Hartzell and Gorman Smathers and a son in law Roy Schreffler.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 E. Penn St., Knox and from 10 to 11 am Thursday at the Salem Lutheran Church, 2057 rt 208, Lamartine. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Church with Pastor Michael Parsh of the Good Hope and Zion Lutheran Churchs officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar View Cemetery in Strattanville.

Knox American Legion Post No. 720 will perform full military honors. In lieu of flowers, George’s family requests memorials be made to Knox Area Ambulance Co., PO Box 636, Knox PA 16232 or the Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice Program, P.O. 271 Perkins Road, Clarion, PA 16214.
