OBITUARY George Joseph Kemerling November 23, 1924 – January 17, 2019 George Joseph Kemerling, left his loving family on January 17, 2019 at the age of 94 years old. George was born to Rex and Winnifred Kemerling on November 23, 1924 in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. He grew up in several towns in Northeastern Oklahoma and Southeastern Kansas where his father worked in the oil fields.
He was living at Parmer Woods at North Austin the time of his passing. At 18, George was drafted in to the U.S. Army during WWII serving in both the European and Pacific fronts. Upon his return, he finished high school in Bay City, Texas then moved to Ft.
Worth, Texas where he met and married Evelyn Lou Willson on October 15, 1948. He began his career as a mechanical draftsman in Ft. Worth at Convair Aeronautics.
After moving his family to Houston, he worked for Natkin and Company which allowed him to work on the Astrodome and the NASA Space Center. He also worked for Sam P. Wallace and Howe Baker. His last employment was with McDermott Engineering, a job that took him to places like Dubai, Amsterdam and Singapore.
While living in Bellaire Tx, Evelyn and George were faithful members of Willow Meadows Baptist church. George was a deacon and “chief hamburger cook” for the youth choir. He lived out his faith by serving each church in which they were members.
After retirement, he and Evelyn moved to Austin to live close to their grandchildren. One day, he noticed that the company that was building the new North Austin Medical Center was the same one he had worked for in Houston. Not one to stay idle, he hired on to help them with some of their drafting and inspection work.
He would tell you that he had flushed every toilet in the building. After the hospital was built, he and Evelyn served as volunteers in the hospital. George drove the golf cart in the parking lot, helping people to and from their vehicles.
Because of his service, George earned the Frist Humanitarian Award that “recognizes individuals whose daily dedication and care giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment. Good people beget good people”. Evelyn and George continued to enjoy retirement at the Conservatory of Austin until her death in 2015 where he had faithfully cared for her.
George passed away while living at Parmer Woods where he was loved by many of the residents and staff. We also want to thank Austin Baptist Church, First Baptist Church for their pastoral care and prayers. George was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn.
He is survived by his son David Kemerling and wife Laurie Kemerling of Lorena , Texas; daughter, Barbara and husband David Matthews of Rockwall, Texas; grandchildren Kara and husband, Troy Alexander; Mary and husband, Luke Connally; Leah and husband, Wes Mullins; Andy Matthews; Natalie and husband, Chad Tolentino. He also is survived by 9 great-grandchildren- Reid and Julia Alexander; Charlie, Harry and Austin Connally; Lincoln and Georgia Mullins; Camden and Beckett Tolentino. They loved their church and even when George could not attend any longer, he insisted that his tithe be sent.
