Metz, George E. Sr., “Woody” as he was known by his friends passed away Sunday, May 12th at Upper Valley Hospital, Troy, OH after a brief illness of pneumonia. Elwood was one of eight children born to David G. and Hazel R. {Wilson} Metz. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Kenneth, Melville and Chuck Metz, sisters, Kathryn Travis, Louise Reynolds and Gertrude Yates along with one cherished grandson, Geoffrey.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Gladys {Clingan} Metz, Tipp City, OH daughter, Julia (Gary) Garvey, Tipp City, OH, son George E. (Peggy) Metz Jr., Ontario, OH and his dear sister, Shirley E. (Bill) Wesco of Alcony, OH. Also surviving are grandchildren, Nichole Hoyt, Katherine Howard and Elizabeth (Seth) Hooks as well as 5 great grandchildren. Elwood joined the Navy in 1944 and served in WWII in the USS General Butner; a Troop Transport Ship, until his discharge in 1946.

He and his wife Gladys resided in the house they built on Main St. in Tipp City for 53 years until their recent move to Randall Residence also in Tipp City. Elwood loved his truck and backhoe and built many buildings in Tipp City including, The Bicycle Shop, Broadway and Nevin Coppock Schools. His other passions were bowling, golf and especially wood-working.

Elwood was known by his family and friends for always lending a helping hand. Family will receive friends Friday, May 17, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at FRINGS AND BAYLIFF FUNERAL HOME 327 W. Main St., Tipp City, OH 45371. There will be a Military Service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 18th at the graveside in Maple Hill Cemetery, Tipp City.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made in loving memory of Elwood to the Tipp City Needy Basket (food pantry) or Shriners Hospital for Children.
