Gerald Clark Henninger was born October 8, 1931, in Abingdon, VA, the only son of David Fields Henninger and Virginia Elizabeth Clark Henninger. He died February 16, 2019, in Newnan, GA. He was preceded in death by son David Lee Henninger (Dree).
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Kitty Marvin McConnell Henninger; children Virginia Henninger Lyles (Dale), Charles Clark Henninger (Melissa), Daniel Marvin Henninger (Linda); grandchildren Grayson Lyles (Kristin), Hugh Rickenbaker (Erika), Katy Henninger Hott (Matt), Joseph Henninger, Holly Henninger Showalter (Josh), Matthew Henninger, Ethan Henninger, James Henninger, Madeleine Henninger; great-grandson Parker Hott; nieces and nephews Carol Lee Shankel, Anna Catherine Shankel, Michael McConnell (Valerie), Sanders McConnell (Debbie), Rachel McConnell Berg,; additional great-nieces and nephews; and cousins Phil Clark (Gwen), Laura Clark Miles, Robert Ringley (Lois), and Betty Ringley. As a young man Gerry was active in the Boy Scouts and high school sports. One of his proudest moments came in a William King football game where he ran 57 yards for a touchdown on his birthday in 1948.
He graduated from William King High School (Abingdon) in 1949, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He was stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant before leaving the service in 1955. He married his high school sweetheart Kitty McConnell of Abingdon in 1952, adding four children to the family in three years, including twins David and Charles.
He attended Emory & Henry College and graduated from East Tennessee State College with a degree in accounting. He began his career with Bill Potts CPA (Abingdon), eventually moving to Roanoke, VA, where he spent thirty years as vice president of Timber Truss Housing. He and Kitty retired to their hometown of Abingdon in 1996.
They most recently resided with their daughter and son-in-law in Newnan, GA. He was an avid hunter and story teller; he loved cars and was an excellent tenor, singing with various church choirs as well as The Voice of the Mountains choral group. He was a member of the “Lunch Bunch” in Abingdon and the Kiwanis Club Abingdon (receiving the George F. Hixson Fellow Award, 2003); he served as treasurer for both the Washington County Historical Society and the Virginia Creeper Trail Club.
The memorial service for Gerald Henninger will be at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, Abingdon, where he was a member.
