Gertrude Brooks Scruggs January 25, 1930 – May 14, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guestbook Entries| Send Sympathy Card Tupelo – Gertrude “Gert” Brooks Scruggs, 89, passed away May 14, 2019, at North Mississippi Medical Center. A native of Tupelo, Gertrude was born on January 25, 1930, to William Otho and Ruby Ann Mosley Brooks. She was a 1950 graduate from Tupelo High School.

She married the love of her life, Daniel Albert Scruggs, and they shared 45 wonderful years until his death March 16, 1995. For 35 years she worked at HIS in Verona as a seamstress and later worked for Lanier Clothing for a number of years. Gertrude was a homemaker, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who touched all the lives of her many friends, whom she adored.

Her family was her greatest joy. She loved flowers and especially tending to her rose garden. She was a longtime member of Priceville Baptist Church for 55 years.

Survivors include her four children, Wesley Scruggs of Tupelo, Theresa Bishop and her husband, Andy of Saltillo, Tommy Scruggs and his wife, Charlene of Saltillo and Cathy Shields of Mooreville; grandchildren, Brian Bishop of Aliceville, Alabama, Josh Scruggs and his wife, Mandy of Mooreville, Jeremy Bishop and his wife, Kristy of Mooreville, Matt Scruggs and his wife, Brittany of Mooreville, Kristopher Chenault and his wife, Mary Beth of Huntsville, Alabama, Jonathan Chenault and his wife Shelby of Tupelo, Megan Scruggs of Tupelo and Cody Shields and his wife, Lindsey of Fulton; six great-grandchildren, Nash Scruggs, Zeke Scruggs, Sutton Scruggs, Saylem Scruggs, Connor Chenault and Boone Chenault; sister, Olean Harbin of Tupelo; and a host of friends and a longtime church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otho and Ruby Brooks; grandson, Matthew Greene; grandson’s wife, Brandi Bishop; and two sisters, Christine Whitten and Jane Guess. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2019, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. John Stevens officiating and the eulogy will be given by Rev. Terry Ramey.

Burial will follow in Oakhill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brian, Josh, Jeremy, Matt, Kristopher and Jonathan. The service will be live streamed and recorded for those who may not be able to attend at www.
