She was born and raised in Hallettsville in the Vsetin Community. Her parents were Adolph Oscar Melnar and Mary Kartman Melnar.
Gladys attended school in the Vsetin Community and continued her education at Southwestern Business University, where she acquired her GED in Houston, and then attended PBX school which brought her to her first and only job in her lifetime. She started out as a PBX operator and clerk and stayed in that position until her failing hearing loss, demanded her transfer to an accounting position where she did not have to use the phone. Her company employer was L. B. Foster & Company, a steel manufacturer out of Pittsburg, PA.
She retired from the company after 44 years of service. Gladys had developed a loss of hearing at an early age, and progressively got worse as she got older. In the past few years, she used the TTY operator to get her calls from family, friends and business.
She also communicated by writing letters. For enjoyment, Gladys watched a great deal of sports. She was an avid supporter of the Houston Oilers and then Houston Texans.
She also enjoyed the Houston Astros. She also enjoyed traveling. As a child on the family farm, Gladys was very adventurous.
At the age of two, when her dad decided to repair the roof on the house using a large ladder, he found that soon he was being followed by Gladys to the top of the roof. On another incident, when the family was working on the farm in the fields, Gladys was asleep under a peach tree while her older sister, Willie Mae, baby sat. After some time, Willie Mae left her to join her parents.
When they returned to the peach tree, Gladys was gone. The family panicked and started looking for Gladys. They first headed home and found her sitting on top of the dining room table, eating crackers.
Gladys also liked climbing trees with her brother Ray, to check out birds’ nests. Gladys is survived by: sister Betty Jean Metzler of Hallettsville; 2 nieces, Cheryl Towery of LaPorte and Karen Wright of LaMarque; 4 nephews, Dale Moore of Dayton, Michael Melnar of Houston, Daryn and Devyn Metzler of Katy; and several great nieces & nephews. Private Family Service will be held at Vsetin Cemetery.
