Obituary for Gladys Stewart Gladys Stewart, 90, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born June 5, 1927, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Barney and Anna Myrtle Johnson Brom. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1945.

She continued her education at Coe College where she studied music. On October 5, 1945, Gladys was united in marriage to Albert Stewart at Oskaloosa. Albert died May 24, 2013.

Early on Glady’s worked on the farm along side Albert, she also cared for her home and family. After several years on the farm, Gladys took a job as a secretary at William Penn College. In retirement, Gladys and Albert delivered papers for the Oskaloosa Herald, they did this until 2013.

Gladys was an active member of Central United Methodist Church for over 70 years, she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School with Albert. Gladys was a talented musician, she enjoyed singing and playing piano, singing in the city choir, and traveling with the Oskaloosa High School Glee Club. While on the farm, Gladys looked forward to having local youth out to walk beans, she enjoyed feeding the workers and visiting with all of them.

She was also an avid golfer. She enjoyed watching sports, especially when her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were participating. She delighted in spending time with her family.

Gladys loved to cook and bake, she found great joy in preparing a meal for her friends and family, and baking cookies for various groups. She looked forward to having football players from William Penn come out and providing them a home cooked meal. She had a kind and gentle spirit accompanied with a servant heart.

Her family includes her three children and their spouses, Sandra and Danny Voss, Emory and LeAnne Stewart, and Alan and Cindy Stewart all of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren, Melissa (Max) Pettyjohn, Bryan Voss, Heidi (Gabe) Washington, Tony (Jessica) Stewart, Lesley (Patrick) DeRenzo, Vanessa Stewart (Justin Allen), Josh Hicks, and Colton Hicks; 11 great grandchildren, Trey, Akeelah, Bryce, Jovie, Kai, Cole, Britney, Braxton, Noah, Annika, and Blaise. In addition to her husband Albert, Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Gregory Albert Stewart, and her brother and his wife, Robert and Bev Brom. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Bruce Wittern officiating.

Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
