Glenn “Smokey”‘s Obituary Glenn J. “Smokey” Hill, 99, of Lewellen, died Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Regional West Garden County Hospital in Oshkosh. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home in Oshkosh with Pastor Janie Freeman of the United Methodist Church in Lewellen officiating. Interment will be in the Ash Hollow Cemetery south of Lewellen with military honors.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial has been established Regional West Garden County Foundation- Nursing Home Activities Fund. Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home in Oshkosh is in charge of the arrangements.

Glenn was born on April 20, 1919, in Buckeye Valley eight miles northeast of Gibbon, Nebraska, the son of William and Blanche (Clark) Hill. He grew up and received his early education at District 97 at Buckeye Valley in Buffalo County. The family moved to Kearney where he attended Junior High and later moved to Lewellen, attending high school there and graduating in 1940.

Glenn entered the United States Navy on September 8, 1941. He was stationed at Corps Christi, Texas and later in San Diego, California during WWII. He then served on the U.S.S. Long Island for 18 months before he was honorably discharged on December 20, 1945.

After the service, Glenn moved back to Lewellen and ran a filling station for three years. He then started sheering sheep before working at a filling station in Chappell, Nebraska. Glenn returned to sheep sheering and later moved to Grover, Colorado where he ran partnership on a ranch for seven years.

After leaving the ranch, he returned to Lewellen where he milked cows. Glenn then purchased a farm in 1973 with his brother Harold. They resided there for many years.

Harold passed away in 1993, and Glenn continued to operate the farm until 1997. In 2007, Glenn moved to the Riverview Assisted Living in Lewellen. When the assisted living closed Smokey moved into the Regional West Garden County Nursing Home where he lived the remainder of his live.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Perl, Harold and Neil Hill; and sisters, Nellie Tangen and Leila Westmoore.
