Mrs. Gloria Collins Kondrat, 90, wife of the late Albert Francis Kondrat and resident of Monroeville, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 24, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Onancock, VA. Born January 17, 1928 in Duquesne, PA, she was a daughter of the late Edward Collins and Gertrude Griffiths Collins. Gloria worked as a stenographer for Bettis Atomic Power Energy Lab, called upon by Admiral Rickover during the inception of the Nuclear Navy.

Raised in a Christian home, Gloria’s parents instilled in her an unwavering love for the Lord, a passion for music, and the importance of their Welsh heritage. At the age of 7, she won the singing contest at the Eisteddfod, an annual Welsh festival of literature, music and performance. Her musical career continued at CBS radio broadcasting and through longstanding nightclub engagements, singing with the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra as well as Benny Goodman.

Rather than tour with the orchestra, she married and raised a family. An active member of Monroeville United Methodist Church, Gloria was an invaluable member of the choir and was responsible for organizing their “Senior Saturday” events. She was the first, and perhaps the only, female president of the North American Welsh Society, a title she was incredibly proud of.

She is survived by her daughters, Kristine Merti and husband Mark of Monroeville, and Kimberlee Kondrat and husband Armando Suarez of Onancock; sister, Marian Rinkuns of Chicago, IL; grandchildren; Johnathan, Andrew and Alexandra Merti; special nieces, Daryl, Charlene, and Janice, Pamela and Susan; as well as many other extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Edward Collins. A private graveside interment will be held at the Restland Memorial Park in Monroeville.

Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www. williamsfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements by the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home.
