Obituary for Gloria C. Walsh Gloria Concetta (Ruffin) Walsh Celebrating a life well lived Our mother Gloria Walsh passed away peacefully at home June 25, 2018. She had a beautiful life married to Mel Walsh for 56 years until he left this world in 2012. She was dedicated to raising us at every stage of our lives.

We are: Eileen (Timothy) Rico, Geralynn (Gregg Peters) Walsh, Laura (Terence) Canniff and Thomas (Staci) Walsh. She was the cherished grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of two. She was the dear sister of Dr. Joseph Ruffin (deceased) from Oklahoma City, OK and had many nieces, nephews and oodles of friends.

She was raised in Oak Park, as the daughter of Caroline (Durante) and Joseph Ruffin, who preceded her in death. Gloria and Mel gave us a wonderful life in Westchester and were active parishioners in Divine Providence Parish and School there until moving to Carillon in Plainfield in 1997 where they were active parishioners at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Romeoville. Gloria taught third grade at Notre Dame School in Clarendon Hills until retiring in 1997.

She loved teaching and like most teachers, spent many long hours outside the classroom on her work. Gloria received her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest. Gloria loved a good story, was a big Jane Austin fan and was always in search of a good read.

Until recently she was active in two book clubs with her Notre Dame friends and Carillon neighbors. She enjoyed playing cards and games with friends and was part Bridge groups. She thought she was terrible at Bridge and felt sorry for her partners.

She has a beautiful singing voice and loved to play the piano. She had a strong faith in our Lord, prayed for everyone and had prayer books in every room for easy access. She also participated in a Christian Community Group for many years.

There was always sauce on the stove, lasagna in the oven and cookies in the cabinet. Gloria loved to cook, entertain and relished hosting holidays and Sunday dinners at home regularly. Dinner was every night at 6:15 and as adults we realized that these dinner table gatherings and conversations were the glue that has held our family together.
