Gloria Jean Smith FRIENDSWOOD – Gloria Jean Smith passed from this life Monday evening, January 21, 2019, at the age of 74 in Houston. Jean was born February 23, 1944 to George Lewis Bear and Rosa Lee Bumgard Bear in Houston, Texas. She grew up in Port Houston where she attended Milby High School and Furr High School.

In 1961 she married Lloyd Smith and together they had 2 children. She created a loving home not only for her family but for anyone who needed a motherly figure. Her big heart and selfless demeanor touched the lives of so many, and it was apparent during her career as the food service manager for Friendswood ISD, from which she retired after 37 years.

In her free time, she loved saltwater fishing, bowling, tending to her garden, and going to the casinos, but nothing made her happier than spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who’s love made those around her better for it. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Lewis and Opal Rosa Lee (Bumgard) Bear; 4 brothers, Charles, Woody, Franklin Bear and Archie Holder Bear; 1 sister, Alice Bear Gamboa; son-in-law, Derrell Brown Survivors include her husband, Lloyd A. Smith; son, Lloyd E. “Eddie” Smith and wife, Jennifer; daughter, Donna Brown; grandchildren, Kory Brown, Susan Brown, Justin Brown, Travis Brown, Shelby Bergfeld and husband, Branson, Cortney Smith, Colton Smith; great-grandchildren, Derrell Brown, Berkleigh Bergfeld; brother, George Edward Bear; beloved pup, Shorty and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2019, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, with Pastor Josh McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Justin Brown, Travis Brown, Colton Smith, Branson Bergfeld, Rank Bridges and Rob Acree.

Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501.
