Gloria Stevens October 22, 1922 – December 17, 2018 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences Gloria Harriet Stevens was born October 24, 1922 in Charleston, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Charles Martin and the late Viola Gibbs-Martin. Gloria moved to New York in 1945 where she later met and wed her husband, Victor Stevens.

They remained happily married until Victor’s passing in 1970. From their union came five children, Floyd, Wilford, Sherman, Cabrini, and Gloria Stevens. Gloria worked as a nurse for over 35 years with the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation in the labor, delivery and nursery units.

She was passionate about her work and would share stories with her family about the role she played in bringing new life into the world and the fulfillment and joy she felt with each child’s birth. Gloria loved music. She would often burst into song to express a feeling or use it as a of solace, comfort, and hope to her children and grandchildren.

As much as she loved to sing she loved dancing even more. You could be certain that she was always the first one on the floor at the start of every party and the last dance at the end. Gloria was the matriarch of her family.

She was the of strength, wisdom, compassion, and the moral compass used by family members and those she loved to guide them on the journey of life. She will live on forever in our hearts. Gloria is survived by her loving children: daughter, Cabrini Stevens and son, Wilford Stevens; grandchildren: Maiisha Stevens-Bonillo, Negesti Stevens-Finlaytor, Omar Stevens, Noni Stevens, Joliek Phillips, Saiidja Phillips, Asswana Stevens, Jaequan Louden, and Sean Stevens; eleven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
