Grace A. Otting, 89, of Maquoketa passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019. Her funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 26 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Temple Hill Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa at 2:30 p.m. Lahey & Dawson Funeral Service of Maquoketa is assisting her family.

Grace was born on May 7, 1929 in Cascade, Iowa to Harry and Marguerite (Flanigan) McQuillen. She graduated from St. Martin’s High School in 1946, and attended the University of Northern Iowa and then she went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Marycrest College. On August 1, 1953 she was united in marriage to James J. Otting at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade.

She was a teacher for over 26 years at the Delwood School in Delmar. Prior to teaching in Delmar, she taught at Sacred Heart Catholic School. She is a member of Sacred Heart Church in Maquoketa and a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Raphael #1156.

Grace spent much of her time at the local YMCA, traveling and playing cards with her friends. For many years she served her community by participating on numerous boards. Because of her love for reading and education, she was active with the Maquoketa Library Foundation.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children; Julia Ardell of Bakersfield, CA, Joseph & Bonnie Otting of Santa Monica, CA, James Otting of Rendodo Beach, CA, her grandchildren; J. D. & Olivia Ardell of San Francisco, CA and Kathlin Ardell of Dallas, Texas and her brother Pat & Dolores McQuillen of Cascade. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters Arlene Hochberger and Rosie Heims and two brothers James McQuillen and James Allen McQuillen. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic School in Maquoketa.
