GREAT FALLS – Grant H. Canoy, 99, of Great Falls, passed away October 4th, 2018 at Benefis Eastview. Grant was born on April 14th, 1919 in Sidney to James and Clara Canoy. He joined the Army October 10th of 1941.

While serving his country, he spent time serving in the South Pacific. Unfortunately, He spent 22 months in the hospital for a hole in his lung. He was discharge from the military on May 20th, 1945.

In 1955, he married Marge Husbey. Together they had four beautiful children. They later divorced.

He was remarried to Lois Blais in 1964, where he added to the Canoy family tree with another son. They were married for 21 years before her passing in 1985. He spent his younger years out in the pastures riding horses and enjoyed taking them to the arena to get an adrenaline rush by Bronc riding.

He was honored to break Gene Autrey’s horse, Snuffy Smith, and was awarded with $20. Growing up, his family had a band where he was the bass player. He enjoyed entertaining people with his music.

He even wrote a few of his own songs. When he wasn’t playing in the band, you would find him dancing on the dance floor. As he grew older, he took an appreciation for nature.

He loved fishing the Montana waters, and spent lots of time hunting the wide-open spaces. He had a career in construction for almost 35 years, where he was a building contractor. Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Hensley and Karen Hulton of Fort Benton; sons, Brett Canoy of Great Falls, Greg Canoy of Washington; brother, Leighton Canoy of Great Falls; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Those who have preceded him in death are his parents James and Clara Canoy; wife, Lois Blais; sisters, Ruby Owen and Nadine Gillette; son, James Canoy, and four brothers.
