Gurney Jackson Maness, 87, of Liberty, died Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro. To celebrate the life of Mr. Maness, a Memorial Service will be held, 11:00 AM, Saturday, at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, Ramseur. Officiating, Rev.

Mark Beane. Gurney was born June 17, 1931 in Chatham County and was a longtime resident of Liberty. He worked in furniture for most of his career, spending 23 years at Liberty Chair, where he was promoted to supervisor.

He retired from there and continued to work in furniture until he fully retired from March Furniture in Ramseur, due to health reasons at age 71. He loved the outdoors which included fishing, hunting, NASCAR racing, and pulling for Dale Earnhardt, Sr. For years he had fish fry’s every week inviting family and friends. Gurney loved working with his hands, which included building a log cabin and a brick furnace where he could cook his fish.

He was also famous for his T-bone steaks. Every year, Gurney had a large garden with a variety of items including peanuts, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, and corn, which he gladly shared with neighbors and family. He loved to experiment and plant different things each year.

He was a man with a strong work ethic, having a knowledge of life that could not be taught in any book, and a great love for his wife and daughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Lula Hicks Maness, sisters, Eula Darr, Margaret Phillips, Lessie Mote, Doris Guthrie, brothers, J.C. Maness, James Allen Maness, and Earl Hubert Maness, and his faithful cat, “Buddy”. Survivors: wife of almost 65 years, Ernestine Martin Maness, of the home, daughter, Pamela Maness Kemp, of High Point, brothers, Tom Maness, of Snow Camp, Junior Maness, of Siler City, Charlie Maness, of Snow Camp, his beloved cat “Sam,” and several nieces and nephews.
