Obituary for Harry P. Cheney Harry P. Cheney, age 86, of Erwin, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at his home. A native of Ada, Ohio, Harry is a son of the late Granville Owen and Eunice May (Long) Cheney. He is currently a member of Fishery Community Church where he was a board member and Sunday school teacher.

Previously, he was a founding member of Faith Baptist where he was a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Harry was an avid supporter of mission work and kept many missionaries in his home during their times in Erwin. He went on several mission trips and was present in Papua, New Guinea when they translated the New Testament there.

Harry worked with Billy Graham’s telephone ministry for several years. Harry was a proud veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Cheney was an Environmental Specialist with the State Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Groundwater Protections.

He was chosen by Governor Ned McWherter for the Tennessee Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Environmentalists. In addition to his parents, Harry is preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Barbara Cheney, brothers, Clyde Cheney, Dallas Cheney, Joe Cheney, Max Cheney, and Charles Cheney and sister Virginia Jones. Harry P. Cheney leaves behind to cherish his memory: Wife: Opal Irene Cheney; Daughter: Kay Norris and husband, Larry; Grandsons: Reuben Farrey, Nathan Farrey, Justin Farrey; Great-grandchildren: Jude Farrey, Scarlett Farrey, Asher Farrey, Finn Farrey, Silas Farrey, Kate Farrey; Brother: Jerry Cheney; Sisters: Phyllis Eitniear, Theora Morrison; Several nieces and nephews.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Harry P. Cheney in a funeral to be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 13, 2018 in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Steve Rice will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday, December 13, 2018 and will continue until service time in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home.

A committal service will be held in mausoleum chapel at Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Those attending will meet at Valley Funeral Home by 10:30 AM to go in procession. Pallbearers will be notified.
