Obituary for Ms. Hazel Doris Peacock Gilmore Hazel was born in Frost, Texas on March 13, 1924 to Lena Elizabeth Williams Peacock and James Gordon Peacock. Hazel was brought up to work and she was a hard worker. She worked in the cotton fields with her brothers and sisters when they were growing up.
Weldon Gilmore saw Hazel’s picture in an annual and said, “that’s my lemon if I never squeezed her”. She married Weldon on August 26, 1944. Hazel was saved in their home on the Wednesday before Easter in April, 1949.
She was baptized on Easter Sunday at First Baptist Church in Channelview, Texas. Weldon was in the baptistry converting from Methodist to Baptist and they were baptized together. She retired from Champion Paper Mill in May 1986.
She was always proud to say “I DO A MAN’S JOB”. She even had the safety toe boots to prove it! The most fun she had after retirement was spending time with her grandchildren.
She was so proud of each one of them. She especially liked the summers. Every morning when they would wake up, Stacy would say, “Where are we going today, Grandma?
” They would go to the movies, swimming, skating, Galveston, Astroworld or anywhere Hazel could think of that might be fun. The kids would run Hazel’s legs off but she kept on going like the Energizer bunny. It’s been close to two years since Hazel began to get sick with the cancer on her leg.
After the first surgery she ended up at Vista Continuing Care, where she learned to walk and think all over again. She worked really hard at getting better. Then she moved to Colonial Oaks and met new friends and started playing bingo.
She was okay for about a year and the cancer on her leg grew back in the same place. After Hazel was operated on this last time, she began to lose her spunk. Then she ended up with pneumonia.
She had a rough few months. Hazel was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Weldon, her son, Bob, sisters, Agnes Pearson, Lorene Owens, Helen Conner and Evelyn Hall, brothers, Conrad Peacock, J.R. Peacock and Wade Peacock and sister-in-law, Janie Gilmore.
