ST. PAUL, VIRGINIA – Mrs. Helen Irene Bartee Crowder, daughter of the late Dode and Eliza (Ramsey) Bartee, passed away at Russell County Hospital, Lebanon, Virginia at the age of 101 years old. Helen was a lifelong resident of St. Paul, Virginia.

At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and continued to grow in her faith throughout her lifetime, serving as a loyal and faithful Christian wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Helen was united in marriage to her husband, Edgar Crowder, in 1935. The couple settled in St. Paul where they raised their four children: Doris, Gary, Barbara, and Chub.

Mr. Crowder preceded Helen in death in 1996. Helen was a devoted, loving mother and grandmother who was very proud of her family. Most of all, Helen adored holidays and family gatherings.

She fondly prepared family-favorite treats such as boiled custard and oyster stew at Christmas time, and homemade hamburgers every Saturday. Preceding her in death were husband Edgar E. Crowder; brothers, John, Roy, and Tom Bartee; children, Gary L. Crowder and Barbara Crowder Pace; granddaughters, Beth Pace and Holly Smith; and parents, Dode and Eliza (Ramsey) Bartee. Helen is survived by her children, Doris Crowder Fletcher (Kyle) of St. Paul, Virginia, James (Chub) Crowder (Benny) of St. Paul, Virginia; grandchildren, Hubert K. Fletcher (fiancée Rebecca Varnadore), Michael Fletcher (Kelly), Kevin Fletcher (April), Jennifer Crowder Clancy (Sean), Rebecca Crowder, Clark Crowder, Amy Pace Williams, Caroline Pace, Deborah Pace Craig (John), Betsy Crowder Weiss (Rob), and Barbi Crowder Healey (Dave); twenty great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; siblings, Harold Bartee and Mildred Bartee Steffey; daughter-in-law, Judy C. Crowder; son-in-law, Angelo Pace; and special caregivers, Linda Harvey, Kay Chaffin, Margaret Bradley, Missy Collins, and Amanda Elam.

Funeral Services for Helen Irene Bartee Crowder will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9th, 2019 in the Chapel of Love Mausoleum – Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia with Rev. Leonard Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia.

Pallbearers will be Michael Fletcher, Kevin Fletcher, Tommy Bartee, and Harry Kelly. Honorary Pallbearer will be Ezra Dye. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Love Mausoleum – Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia.
