Helga’s Obituary NEW ULM Helga Lodes, age 92, of New Ulm, died Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Crystal Seasons Living Center in Lake Crystal. Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Butternut Township, with Pastor Salim Kaderbhai officiating. Burial will follow in the Butternut Valley Cemetery, Butternut Township.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – SOUTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. Visitation will continue from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. To leave an online condolence, or to sign the guestbook, please visit: www.

mvfh.org Helga is survived by her daughters, Karen (Gary) Swedberg of Lake Crystal, Carol Lodes of Mankato, Judy (Lee) Karpen of Lake Crystal; son, Ron (Lynn) Lodes of New Ulm; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Lodes; sister, Borghild Sperl; brother, Astor Aukrust. Helga R. Aukrust was born on December 4, 1926 in St. James to Ole and Olena (Gudvangen) Aukrust.

She attended rural school #67 near Hanska. Helga graduated from Hanska High School in 1944. She then attended Mankato Beauty School in Mankato.

On October 29, 1949, Helga married the love of her life, Raymond Ellsworth Lodes, in Madelia. The couple was blessed with 4 children, who they raised together over their 68 years of marriage. After marriage they lived on the farm except the two years they were in California.

She worked as a Beautician, office worker at a phone company in California, and was a homemaker. Helga enjoyed collecting antique dishes, baking, flower gardening, bird watching, playing Bingo and cards, family gatherings, and spending time with her adorable grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helga was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid at church, and the Searles Senior Citizen’s.
