Henry Joseph Stahl, was born December 16th, 1916 and named after his father Henry J. Stahl, Sr, he went by his middle name Joe most of his life. His mother name was Marie (Weimer) Stahl and he was the middle child of five boys, brothers Carl, James, John, and Robert proceeding him in death. Also proceeding him in death was his wife of fifty-six years Rose Ann (LaRussa), his beloved daughter Jacquelyn (Steve) Vogel, and grandsons, Scott and Todd Stahl.

Joe was a Master Sergeant in the Army Airforce during World War II. As a medical supply sergeant, he traveled extensively over many countries, including India, Egypt, Italy, France, England, and Germany. While stationed just thirty miles outside of the city, he often recalled the nightly air raids and bombings of London.

After the war, Joe went to work as a street light switcher at the Indianapolis Power and Light Company. Later he became sub-station checker and was often called out in the middle of the night to cut the power to lines that had fallen down during summer and winter storms. He maintained that position until he retired thirty-five years later.

Joe married the love of his life, which he affectionately called his little Rosie, on September 27th 1947. They had four children, Jacquelyn was the oldest, followed by his three surviving children, Mark (Linda), Clare (Brenton) Rich, and Michael (Liz). He also is survived by two grandchildren, Ryan (Maria), Jonathan, and his one-year old great grandchild Henry Anthony Stahl.

Henry grew up on South Meridian Street, across from Sacred Heart Church where he attended both grade and high school. Shorty after they were married, he and Rose moved to the city of Beech Grove. He loved working on cars, tinkering around the house, and in later years spend time on his front porch talking to the neighbors.

At the age of nighty-five he moved out of his home and moved to St. Paul’s Hermitage where he resided until his passing. The family of Henry would like to thank the administrators and staff of St. Paul’s for their kindness and care in his waning years. His passion besides his family, was always volunteering to help others.

This included assisting setting up Holy Name church’s June Jamboree, taking the sisters at the convent to the grocery store, and assisting friends and neighbors with their electrical problems. He also would donate regularly to his favorite charities, St. Vincent De Paul and the Sisters of the Poor. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services (1458 South Meridian Street) with a Rosary service concluding at 7:00 p.m. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery.
