Herbert Allen Blachly, 78, passed away Thursday, November 15th. He was the second son of the late Ray and Mary Blachly, born October 18, 1940 in Franklin Township. In 1941, the family purchased a farm on Strausser Rd.

in Lawrence Township where five more children were born. He was fully involved in the constant work of running the family farm. He was baptized at an early age through the Church of Christ.

Herb was a 1958 graduate of Northwest High School, received his bachelor’s degree from Kent State and his masters degree from West Virginia University at Morgantown. Herb was a teacher and coach at Brunswick, teacher and head football coach at Northwest and retired from teaching from Tuslaw High School. He also worked for W.G. Lockhart Construction in the summer’s for 26 years.

He had a vast knowledge of the Canal Fulton area and the “old timers’ who lived there. He enjoyed hunting and sports, especially football, and followed the Browns, Ohio State, the Cavs and the Indians. Previous to his declining health, he was known for his sweet corn sales, chopped wood delivery, his deer herd and his peacocks.

He provided the mules to pull the St. Helena canal boat and walked them back and forth from his farm. He was a long time member of the Canal Fulton Lions Club and the Lawrence Township Zoning Board. He is suvived by his wife, Barbara (Daugherty); daughters and sons-in-law, Kellie and David Miller of Pennsylvania, Kathy and Duane Norman of Virginia; stepdaughter Bethany Wagner of Canal Fulton; grandchildren, Amanda (Zac) Wake, Alex Miller, Jennifer and Joseph Norman; brothers Ralph Blachly of Akron, Harold Blachly of Canton; sisters Martha Blachly-Cross of Cleveland and Margaret Ross of Canal Fulton; brother-in-law Michael Daugherty of South Euclid and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert and Bonnie Blachly, their daughters, Audra and Paula Blachly; sister, Paulette Blachly and first wife and mother of his children, Marlene (Maag) Blachly. Funeral Services will be held TUESDAY, 1:00pm at the Swigart-Easterling Funeral Home, 624 Cherry St. E. (Rt. 93) Canal Fulton.

Burial at Canal Fulton Cemetery. Visitation Monday, 4pm to 6pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Canal Fulton Lions Club.
