Hobert’s Obituary Hobert W. Smith Jr. Hobert passed away at his residence in Hillsdale, Louisiana on May 13, 2019 at the age of 85. He was born and raised in St Helena Parish. In 1952, he married his high school sweetheart Mae Jean.
Shortly after their marriage he was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas where he was a private in the US Army. Being honorable discharge, the two of them moved back to Hillsdale to start their family. He was blessed with three children .
He was a dairyman for many years then ultimately pursuing his love for construction, he joined Carpenters Local 1098 out of Baton Rouge. He worked out of the carpenters union for 42 years of which time he worked on the Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge, the new State Capital and many other Louisiana landmarks. His greatest accomplishment was the way he raised his family.
He instilled in each of them his love for Jesus Christ and his love for them. He taught each of them to be strong independent people and to always remember that God came first then family. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Mae Jean Smith .
Three children daughter Reba Jean Lee (Sammie), son Hobert “Billy” W. Smith III, and daughter Velvet Lopinto (Joe). Eight grandchildren Kindle Sevin (Garrett), Roman Kyle Lee (Jennifer), Cassie Ly Smith, Smitty Smith (Maggie), Addie Holley (John), Crystal Alexander (JR), Michael Davis (Rachel), and Cara Lyn Reno (Dustin). Twelve great-grandchildren Bryce Sevin, Braxton Lee, Hudson Smith, Abner Holley, Evan Alexander, Colby Davis, Aubree Davis, Emmet Reno , River Reno, Morgan Toups (Jeff), Dustin Sevin (Jayme), and Renae Rebstock (Colby).
He is preceeded in death by his parents Hobert W. Smith , Sr. and Lula Bell Bennett Smith, brother Thomas Eugene Smith, and grandson Shane Lee. Visitation will be Thursday May 16, 2019 at Cornerstone Church in Amite, Louisiana from 9am-Noon with funeral at Noon followed by internment at Killian Chapel Cemetary. Reba, Billy, and Velvet would like to especially thank each grandchild for all the numerous visits and constant care given to “Paw Paw Hobert” over the last few months we could of never done it without you.
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to New Century Hospice, Janet Becnel , Dr. Rab, and the whole community of friends for all the prayers , thoughts and visits. Arrangements by Mckneely Funeral Home Amite. Pallbearers are Garrett Sevin, Roman Kyle Lee, Smitty Smith, John Holley, Michael Davis, Dustin Reno and Honorary Pallbearer, Daryl Robertson.
