Ila “Ray” Stevens, a 40-year resident of Bartlett, TN, passed away Friday, January 18, 2019. “Nanny,” as she was called by her grandchildren, was an amazing wife, mom, grandmother, friend, and a baker of cornbread like no other. She was born November 10, 1927, in Scotts Hill, TN, to George and Ruby Wallace.

Her parents died when she was young, and she was raised by her uncle, Charlie “Unc” Kennedy, and two aunts, Aunt Bill and Aunt Bate. Married for 62 years to Franklin H. Stevens, Ray retired from BellSouth and lived at Wesley Meadows Assisted Living in Hernando, MS, for the past four years. A country girl at heart, Ray grew up on a farm and worked hard all her life.

She adored her family and dedicated her life to them. She loved cornbread, tomatoes, black-eyed peas and chocolate. Ray also enjoyed sewing and dancing.

For many years, she was member of the Shiners International Daughters of the Nile. Ray is survived by her three children, Donald (Harriette) Stevens, Barbara (Danny) Daniels and Lisa Taylor; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kim, Danny, Charlie, Mallory, Mindy and Madison; a host of great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Geraldine Callahan; and many other nieces, nephews and other family members. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 21, 2019 from 5-7 p.m., and funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Forest Hill Funeral Home East, 2440 Whitten Road, Memphis, TN.

Memorial gifts in honor of Mrs. Stevens may be offered to donor’s choice.
