Obituary for Irene Mae Bowler (DePew) It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Irene Mae Bowler, age 91, of Battle Creek, MI and formerly of Kalamazoo announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, cousin and friend on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at her apartment in Battle Creek, MI. She was born January 26, 1927 in Kendallville, IN the daughter of Alfred Hanson DePew and Glenniece (Coe) DePew. Irene was a switchboard operator for Atlas Press in Kalamazoo, which made drill presses and industrial machinery, and then she worked at West Tab Paper until as a family they moved to Ohio in 1978 when she became a stay at home mom and housewife.
She had graduated high school. She had lived in Kalamazoo for the past 18 years and came to Battle Creek a month ago. She married Peter Thomas Bowler in May 1964 and he passed away in Ohio in 1999.
She is survived by two sons: Michael D. & Karen Stevens of Bellevue, MI; Thomas Gregory “Greg” & Rene Bowler of Chattanooga, TN; the favorite granddaughter: Jessica L. Resendiz of Kalamazoo, MI; two grandsons: Lance M. Stevens of Bellevue, MI; Kenneth A. Stevens of Jenison, MI; three sisters: Katherine Bradley of DeWitt, MI; Marilyn Kay of Kalamazoo, MI; Brenda Koets of Portage, MI; and a brother: Richard “Dick” DePew of New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother: Lance DePew (1976), her husband Peter Thomas Bowler. She enjoyed playing Solitaire while she listened to the Detroit Red Wings Hockey games on the radio, she thoroughly loved her grandchildren especially Jessie, and loved her household Great Dane dogs through the years.
She liked listening to the Detroit Tigers games and then talking with her sister about baseball and hockey; she also enjoyed listening to opera and Big Band music. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed cooking with spices and liked being a housewife.
No visitation or funeral service is planned at this time. The family will get together in the summer of 2019 for a family celebration of life service for Irene. Cremation has been conducted.
