OBITUARY Jacquelyn Goodwin Burgess February 23, 1928 – October 8, 2018 Jacquelyn Goodwin Burgess, age 90, of Apex, NC went to be with her Lord on October 8th, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Jacque’s faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was her anchor. Her sincere smile, enthusiastic love of life, and concern for all people endeared her to those she met.

She loved everyone, encouraged others, and had abundant energy. Jacque was born on February 23rd, 1928 in Apex, NC. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Oscar S. Goodwin, and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Shreve Goodwin.

Jacque and her three brothers, Bill, Joel, and Jim flourished in a loving Christian home while growing up in Apex. Jacque taught Kindergarten at Longview Methodist Church in Raleigh for 11 years. She was a supervisor with the North Carolina Department of Child Daycare Licensing for 20 years.

Jacque was the first consultant hired when the State Law was passed in 1971, regulating child day care centers. She lived long enough to see adequate enforcement and better protection for children. It was her honor to serve 12 years on the Board of Trustees for NC Baptist Children’s Homes.

In April of 2009, she was awarded the NC Baptist Heritage Award for exemplary service. Jacque attended Women’s College of Greensboro and UNC-Chapel Hill, where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She was also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and an active alumni, receiving the “ARC with Diamonds” for service.

For 18 years she volunteered at the Baptist WMU Women’s Prison Ministry where she touched many lives and shared the love of God with many inmates. She was a supporter of organ donation, and a brain donor to the Kathleen Bryan Alzheimer’s Research Project at Duke. Jacque was a very active member of Apex Baptist Church and Longview Baptist in Raleigh, where she taught 4 and 5 year olds in Sunday School for the past 63 years.

She was a regular visitor to nursing homes and the homebound in her community. Jacque is survived by her loving children Elizabeth Chappell of Apex and Andy Burgess (Jan) of Boone, grandsons Nathan Burgess (Caroline) of Boone, Adam Burgess (Katie) of Richmond VA, and Aaron Chappell (Lauren) of Apex. She adored her 5 great grandchildren Amber Burgess, Andy and Finley Burgess, and Parker and Hayden Chappell.

She is also survived by her 2 brothers, Dr. Joel Goodwin (Joyce) of Salisbury, NC and Dr. Jim Goodwin (Betty) of Henderson, NC, along with many adored nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother Bill (Dot) Goodwin of Apex. Her life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 13th at 11:00 am.

The service will be held at Apex Baptist Church, 110 S. Salem St., Apex NC 27502. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to North Carolina Baptist Children’s Homes, PO Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361.

This will continue Jacque’s lifelong commitment toward investing in and providing loving, Christian homes to less fortunate youth throughout North Carolina. Donations may also be made to Apex Baptist Church, 110 S. Salem St., Apex NC 27502.
