Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Mr. James Garrie Brasher, 91, died on the February 10, 2019, in Hendersonville, TN, after a short illness. A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 14, 2019, at 10:30 a.m., at the Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Reverend Michael Peasall will officiate.

A memorial service for Nashville/Hendersonville friends and family will be planned for a later date. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of local arrangements. Born in Tallahatchie County, he grew up as the only child of Garrie and Maggie (Tribble) Brasher on a small farm near Charleston, MS.

He graduated from Charleston High School in 1945. Mr. Brasher served in the U.S. Marine Corps in both World War II and the Korean War. After military service, he completed his college education on the “GI Bill,” graduating with honors from Mississippi College in Clinton, MS.

Mr. Brasher was the first of his extended family to receive a college education. He furthered studies in business law, taxes, and accounting at The University of Memphis School of Accountancy. While in Clinton, Mr. Brasher worked as a full time employee in the news room of the Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson, MS.

In Memphis, he became associated with Hull-Dobbs, the world’s largest chain of automobile dealerships, in a business management capacity. From 1979 to 1980, he worked in Century City, CA, for a business management firm in the film and television industry. When asked, “what was the most thrilling incident of your life?

” he would reply, “flying the Concorde from Paris to New York”. In his youth, “Jimmy” was widely known as an old time fiddle player and was called on to play for many country dances. In Nashville, TN, he became a Lincoln Mercury dealer and through that business, he made many friends in the world of Country Music.

He finished his career working for Nashville Wraps in Hendersonville, TN, before retiring at the age of 75. He was an avid writer of short stories and newspaper articles, one of which was “Let’s Take a Gander at It,” which had an impact on the subject of international air travel safety and security. He was an active member of the Berean Class of North Oxford Baptist Church since moving to Oxford in 2003.

Mr. Brasher is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carolyn Sturdivant Brasher of Hendersonville; three children, John Brasher of Oxford, Martha Brasher (Tom) Boone of Nashville, and Sally Brasher (Michael) Peasall of White House, TN; eight grandchildren, Carolyn Elizabeth (Boone) Bledsoe, Philip Lawrence Boone, Sarah Joyce (Peasall) McGuffey, Hannah Grace (Peasall) Fisher, Leah Faith (Peasall) Bryan, Joseph Clay Peasall, Emma Caroline Peasall, and Julia Elizabeth Peasall; and five great-grandchildren, Thomas Henry Bledsoe, Adelaide Elizabeth Bledsoe, Jack Avett Bryan, Lillian Eila Bryan, and Langford Oaks McGuffey. In honor of Mr. James Brasher’s service to our country, the flag of the United States Marine Corps will be flown at Coleman Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left on the Tribute Wall at www.
