He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on August 29, 1953, to Bill and Betty (Peake) Porter. His family moved to Houston in 1963, where Jim attended Montgomery Elementary and James Madison High School, graduating in 1971.

He attended San Jacinto College and took courses at Rice University. Like his granddaddy and his brothers, Jim loved the outdoors. In his younger years he was an avid fisherman, but later he became passionate about surfing and duck hunting.

He gave up surfing many years ago but continued to duck hunt until weeks before his death. Jim worked for Baylor Industries for a time as a machinist, and he left Baylor to become employed at Gray Tools later becoming ABB Vetco Gray and later becoming Grayloc Products where he celebrated 40-years of Service in 2018. In 1985, he met Vicki Baley who became the love of his life.

They married in 1986 and raised four children. They moved from Houston to the quiet and peaceful town of Bellville in 1998. Where they purchased a home that was built in 1912 that became their “Labor of Love”.

The greatest decision Jim ever made is when he surrendered his life to Jesus as his Lord and Savior in 1972. He became a faithful follower of the Lord Jesus, serving him at Townwood Baptist Church, Braeburn Valley Baptist Church, Almeda Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church of Bellville, where he often substituted as a Bible teacher in Sunday school. He bore faithful witness to His Savior in every area of his life.

Jim was a man of integrity and straightforwardness. He was a faithful and loving husband and a wonderful father to his children. His wife described him in one word, honorable.

He was like Barnabas, just a good man. He was smart, diligent, faithful, dependable employee and a loyal friend to many. Jim is survived by his beautiful wife, Vicki of 32 years; children: Eric Baley and his wife, Kim, of Sugarland, Andy Baley and his wife, Pam, of Kingwood, Jonathan (Johnny) Porter and his wife, Sandy, of West Columbia, and Julie Porter of Spring; ten adorable grandchildren who loved their Poppy very much; brothers: William Leslie (Les) Porter, Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Port Aransas and Stephen Leonard (Steve) Porter of Manvel and numerous nieces, nephews, family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Jim, you will be missed. In your life and suffering you taught us how to live as a Christian and in your death, you showed us how a Christian should die.
