Obituary for James “Jim” F. Roach ILION – James “Jim” F. Roach, 74, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at MVHS Rehabilitation and Nursing Center surrounded by his family. Jim was born on April 30, 1944, in Utica, the son of Joseph E. and Annabelle (Kennedy) Roach. He was a graduate of UFA and MVCC where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Jim was a US Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was employed with MDS, Redco Foods and retired from Remington Arms where he was a manager and supervisor. Jim was a kind, thoughtful man who was devoted to his children, grandchildren and was close to his brothers.
He was a devout Catholic and a proud veteran. Jim treasured time spent in the Adirondacks and his camp on Otter Lake. A NASCAR enthusiast, he participated in the Richard Petty Driving Experience and appreciated muscle cars and motorcycles.
Jim loved running and ran many local races including the Falling Leaves race and the Boilermaker which he ran into his 60s. Surviving are his three children and their spouses, Keith and Patricia Roach, Cleveland, NY, Kevin and Melissa Roach, Pennsylvania and Julie Goold, Liverpool; brothers, Joseph, Robert (Susan), Larry and William (Judy) Roach; grandchildren, Vanessa (Kenneth Wagschal) Roach, Allison (Casey Holmberg) Roach, Jennifer, Andrew and Collin Roach; former wife, Christine Thierfelder; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and special friends, Margaret and Cindy. Jim was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Sebastian, and brother, Richard Roach.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd. , Utica. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. In lieu of flowers, please consider remembrances in Jim’s name to CNY Veteran’s Outreach or MVHS Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
