James M. “Jim” McCoy, 85, of Galveston, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, May 20, 2019 at the home of his daughter in Marion. Jim was born June 20, 1933 in Galveston, Indiana to Frederick D. “Ted” and Sarah Elizabeth (Spence) McCoy. He married Josephine “Jo” Freeman on February 22, 1958 and she preceded him in death August 28, 1999.

He later married Bessie M. Zeck in June of 2001 and she preceded him in death April 2, 2017. Jim was a heavy equipment operator for over 40 years working for Mohr Construction and the Union. He was also a member of the Galveston Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Chief, EMT and Fireman for many years.

Jim enjoyed eating out with family and friends any time he could. He loved steam engines, watching his grandchildren play sports and his beloved dog Maggie. He was also an avid Cub’s fan, which is a McCoy family tradition.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Surviving family include his children, James F. “Jim” (Marilyn) McCoy, Julie (Jim) Mitchell, 3 step children, Rod (Angie) Zeck, Dawn (Kevin) Pullen and Ryan (Andrea) Zeck; his grandchildren, Greg (Megan) McCoy, Eric (Ashley) McCoy, and Katie Mitchell; step grandchildren, Kristin (Phil) Gurule, Colton (Laura) Zeck, Kensi (Travis) Yoakum, Kassi Zeck, Conner and Caden Zeck, Kyle (Lynsee) Pullen, Derek (Taylor) Pullen, Delaney and Maryn Zeck, Tyler and Brenton Gaumer; great grandchildren, Collin and Eden McCoy and step great grandchildren, Karrington and Lakelyn Lund, Gentry Gurule, Cohen Zeck-Wright, Crew Yoakum, Kashton, Kodee Pullen, Lane Pullen and Leonny Zeck; sister-in-law, Marjorie McCoy and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Josephine, second wife, Bessie, brother, Alan and sister Sylvia.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at First Baptist Church, 207 S. Sycamore St. in Galveston with Pastors Eric McCoy and John Rhodes officiating. Visitation of family and friends will be held Thursday evening from 4 – 8 p.m. also at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to the Galveston Vol.

Fire Dept. in Jim’s honor. Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston has been entrusted with arrangements.
