James Louis Calafatis February 16, 1927 – March 23, 2019 James L. Calafatis, longtime area resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 23, 2019. He was 92. Born in 1927 to Valentine (Moschou) and Louis Calafatis in Tonawanda, NY.

He attended school in Dunkirk, NY, before enlisting in the Navy (Seabees) in 1944. He served in the Pacific Theater and saw action in Okinawa, and also served in China and Hawaii. After discharge, he worked at the family owned Plantation Restaurant, formally in Niagara Falls.

Later he worked with his father at The Hotel Francis, Hotel Dunkirk, and then at The Hotel Richmond in Batavia, a family business. He received an associate’s degree from Michigan State University and went on to be the beverage manager at Treadway Inn, Sheraton Inn and Ramada Inn. He then became manager at NCO Club at Fort Dix until its closing.

He also worked for Alimo and Budget. He will be remembered for his love of jazz music, animals and spoiling his grandchildren. He is survived by daughter Elizabeth (Gary) Beaty, grandchildren Brendan Lindahl, Kaitlin (Bryan) Jackson, Gavin Lindahl, Logan Beaty, great grandson Emmett Jackson, and many cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife Susan (Murphy), step-son Edward Neyerlin, and sister Lucille Calafatis. Memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice. No prior visitation.
