James “Red” Marler died on September 22, 2018 in Willow Creek, CA at the age of 79. James is survived by his children, Ronald Marler, Sheri Berg and, Jeanna Akey, his grandchildren, Jeanneshia Marler, Veronica Zavala, Bryan Berg, Matthew Berg, Timothy Gore, Andrew Gore, James Thomason, Logan Akey and Ronan Akey, and his great grandchildren, Eli Berg London Gore and Jasmin Thomason. He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Willine Marler, his daughter Jaye Marler Gore and his grandson Rodney Fregoso.

Red was born on February 16 1939 in East Los Angeles to Clecy and Mattie Mae Marler. He joined the Marines in 1957 at age 18. He worked at the Carolina California Plywood Mill Company in Salyer, CA and then started his law enforcement career in 1968 with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

He retired in 2000 after 32 years and promptly went back to work for the Hoopa Tribal Police and Klamath Trinity School District. Red loved hunting, fishing, gardening and jam. He was an active and dedicated member of the American Legion where he was elected Commander in 2018.

He spent many years coaching basketball and little league and delivering home grown flowers to all his favorite locals. He was Mr. Mom to many who needed a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen and a place to stay.
