James’ Obituary James M. Schmidt, 87, of Chicago, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. He was born January 3, 1932 in Bloomington, Ill. to Christopher Schmidt and Doris Schmidt, nee Greenman.

The family moved to Chicago when he was young, and into the Mayfair neighborhood when he was 12, where he resided for most of his life. James is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Seabee during the Korean War. Upon returning from military service, James married Dorothy Brasel on October 20, 1956.

They had two sons, who were raised in the same two-flat that he grew up in. During a career that spanned 50 years, he helped build the Chicago skyline as a proud member of Plumbers Local 130. He was also deeply involved with his community as Scoutmaster and Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop 904, and as a leader for VFW Niles Memorial Post 7712.

He is remembered for his dry wit, and for his love of travel, the Cubs and his family. He is survived by two sons, Martin (Sandi) Schmidt and Robert Schmidt (Elizabeth Brohan); four grandchildren, James Patrick (Jean) Schmidt, Michael Schmidt (Becky Saladino), Ryan Schmidt and Matthew Schmidt; two great-grandsons, Bryan Schmidt and Patrick Schmidt; and several cherished nephews and nieces and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; his sister, Mildred (Robert) Hennig; and his brother, William Schmidt.

Visitation is Friday, February 8, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. at Markiewicz Funeral Home, 108 Illinois Street, Lemont, IL. Viewing from 9-10 a.m. followed by funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 608 Sobieski Street, Lemont, IL.

Interment All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to BSA Troop 904, c/o St. Edwards Catholic Church, 4350 W Sunnyside, Chicago, IL 60630; or Niles Memorial VFW Post 3579, 6839 North Milwaukee Avenue, Suite 100, Niles, IL 60714-4419.
