Jamil Osman of Laurel, Maryland passed away on February 28, 2019. He was born on October 14,1934 to James Upshaw and Willie Lee Phillips (née Ector). Born in Newnan, Georgia, he was a long-time resident of East Harlem, NY prior to moving to Maryland.

He retired from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Jamil was a lover of jazz, an avid reader, and a self-taught multilinguist who embraced African culture and history. He is survived by his beloved daughter Saleema Osman, his granddaughter Sarah Osman and loved ones.
