Janet’s Obituary Janet Broge, a sixty two-year resident of Wyoming, Ohio, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the age of 96. Her death came several weeks after suffering a stroke. Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years Robert (Bob), her parents Alden and Burrell Woodley, and her brother Donald.
She is survived by her five children: Edward (Penny); Laurel Mauldin (Clyde); Charles; Thomas; and James (Nancy); 11 grandchildren Jason (Mary Jane); Elizabeth Foote (Joe); Rebecca Liu (Tom); David Mauldin (Darlene); Greg (Julia); Heather Orr (Travis); Tommy (Kathryn); Rachel Wareham (Jordan); Sarah; Tim (Dawndra); and Brad (Emily) and 21 great grandchildren (with numbers 22 and 23 on the way). Along the way, she took several other people under her wing, especially Rod Loza (Martha), her AFS son from Ecuador. Janet was born and raised in Euclid, Ohio.
She endured tragedy in her teenage years with the death of her brother from Leukemia. An excellent student, she graduated from Euclid Central High School, attended Kent State University and graduated from Flora Stone Mather College, which later became part of Case Western Reserve University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1944. During her time in Euclid, she met the love of her life, whom she insisted on calling “Bob”, even though his family always called him “Rob” (even to his death in 2017).
They were wed July 22, 1944, and moved to Pittsburgh while Bob worked on rocket fuel research in support of the war effort. After the war, they moved to Ithaca while Bob pursued his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Cornell University, where their first child was born. When Bob took a job with Procter & Gamble, they moved the family to Cincinnati.
While Janet raised the growing family, they finally settled in Wyoming. Janet became an active member of the community, where she was president of the Wyoming Women’s Club, the Garden Club, active at the Wyoming Civic Center and a writer for the Mill Creek Valley News. One of her most noteworthy articles centered around her attempt to run the family on a welfare budget for a month.
Always a competitor, Janet loved to golf and play tennis, and even tried downhill skiing on the rugged slopes of central Ohio, as well as one time in the Alps. She also loved to travel, having visited Europe several times, Australia, South America and all 50 states, Mexico and Canada. She loved her rose garden, and was particularly adept at growing bumper crops of zucchini (which none of her kids would eat).
Music was another love of her life, always humming an aria in anticipation of an upcoming Opera and holding season tickets to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. It was not easy to buy Janet presents. One Christmas, her gift list included “I want $500!
”. It turned out what she really wanted was a new dishwasher, and with 5 kids, who could blame her. Generous to a fault, Janet always sought to support just causes and Christian values.
Central to her life was her faith in Jesus Christ. As an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Finneytown, she enjoyed singing in the choir and Women’s Circle. Ever the reporter, when asked about the truth of the Gospel, she explained that “there were multiple eye witnesses who wrote down what they saw for us”.
Even as her memory faded and she struggled to make it to services in her last years, she was solid in her recitation of the Lord’s prayer and singing her favorite hymns. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 11th from 10 am until time of Funeral Service at 11 am, all at Mihovk Rosenacker Funeral Home, 10211 Plainfield Rd. , Evendale.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, designating the Endowment Fund.
