Obituary for Janet Stockburger (Gill) Janet Joyce Stockburger, 82 years, of Wells, died Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Janet was born April 20, 1936 in Boston, MA, the daughter of Armand and Mary (Souza) Gill. Janet was raised in Provincetown, MA One of Janet’s first jobs was a switchboard operator for the telephone company.
Janet went on to work for Capital Airlines as a stewardess. While based in Chicago she met and married Peter Stephens. Janet and Peter had three children together before his death in 1963.
It was in Chicago where she met David Stockburger. After marrying in May of 1969 they purchased a small manufacturing company in North Carolina. This was the beginning of a lifelong entrepreneurial career.
From there they never looked back, only forward. Together they worked, raised a family, travelled, and simply enjoyed life. David and Janet moved with the wind.
What they thought would be a house purchase in Boothbay Harbor actually turned out to be in Bar Harbor. Their grand house, in which they resided from 1971 to 1984, is now the Sea Croft Inn. Having to drive nearly 60 miles for office supplies ignited yet another entrepreneurial enterprise.
They opened Sea Croft Office Products, eventually expanding to Ellsworth. Additionally, in 1978 David and Janet opened Cranberry Cove Restaurant on Big Cranberry Island which was well known for lobsters and popovers. David and Janet loved to travel the world, and especially enjoyed Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
Janet also enjoyed cooking, but not so much that she didn’t love dining out, reading and playing computer games. Wherever they lived, their doors were always open for family and friends to stay and visit. Janet is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Janet and Mike Donovan, David and Denise Stockburger, John and Charisse Stockburger, Robin Stephens and Robbie Fling, Lance Stephens and Leah Murch, Dale Stockburger and Tessa Hartley, Kelli and Bruce Martin; her much loved eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, as well as looking forward to the birth of her six great grandchild.
Also, she is survived by, a very special nephew and wife, “Bobby” and Diana Marderosian, and her niece Marianna Greely; by her dear childhood friend, Joan Tremblay and by her dear friends and neighbors, Debbie and Larry Walsh.
