Obituary for Janet Johnson (Toms) Janet M. Johnson passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018 in her home in Houston, amid her loving family. She was born to Edwin W. and May (Mary Meenahan) Toms at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, MN on November 7, 1933. She grew up in Ely, MN, graduating from high school in 1951.
Janet worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Shipman Hospital during her high school years and while she attended Ely Junior College for a year in preparation for transfer to the nursing program at the Villa of St. Scholastica in Duluth. Janet graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and worked as a surgical nurse for a year at St. Mary’s hospital in Duluth. She then moved to Denver, CO where she worked at Presbyterian Hospital.
In Colorado Janet met Tommy L Johnson, and they were united in marriage in the Ely United Methodist Church on September 7, 1958. After their marriage, Janet and Tom lived in Idaho Springs, CO. and Mesa, AZ before settling in Houston in 1973.
. Daughter Terrie and son Mark were born while they lived in Idaho Springs, and Troy was born while they were in Arizona. While the family lived in Mesa, Janet worked as Asst.
Director of Nurses Mesa Lutheran hospital. In Houston she worked in various nursing capacities at Memorial Hermann Hospital until her retirement in 2008 at age 75. Janet was a member of Fair Haven United Methodist Church in Houston where she enjoyed her Sunday school class and working with the Altar Guild.
She is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law: Terrie and Don Heidemann, sons: Mark and Troy Johnson: granddaughters Mara Heidemann and Rachel (Zachary) Taylor, and Sydney Johnson: great grandson, Cooper Dale Taylor: sister and brother-in-law, Flora and Robert O’Hagan (Wisc. )and sister-in-law, Peggy Toms (Penn. ).
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Johnson [1998]: her parents: Edwin and May Toms: her brother James Toms. Celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m at Fair Haven United Methodist Church, 1330 Gessner Rd, Houston, TX 77055 In Lieu of Flowers the family requests that a donation be made to the Fair Haven United Methodist Church Youth Ministry. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Ely, Minnesota.
