Obituary for Janet R. Scott Janet R. Scott “Nana”, age 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. She was born October 28, 1944, in Jersey City, NJ. She graduated from Laurel High School in 1963.
She married John Scott, Sr. on December 28, 1969, in Prince Frederick, MD. While raising their three children, Janet worked as the school librarian at the Calvert Christian School, from 1978 until 1989. Once her children were in high school and college, Janet began her own college education at the University of Maryland in College Park, where she graduated, Magna Cum Laude and earned her Bachelor of Science in 1993.
She went on to earn her Masters of Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. From there, Janet found her calling as a therapist, counselor, mediator and all-around super-hero. For almost 20 years, Janet worked with Calvert County’s Crisis Intervention Center where she was a supervisor and facilitator of several anger management and domestic violence offender groups.
Most recently, Janet volunteered as Chairperson of the Community Mediation Center and served on several other volunteer domestic violence boards and teams. During her career, Janet received countless awards and citations for her generous and selfless nature. When she wasn’t saving the world, “Nana” treasured her family.
She loved antiquing and visiting her second home in Hilton Head, SC with her husband, shopping with the kids and grand-kids and caring for her great-grandbabies every Monday. She is survived by her husband and best friend, John Scott, Sr.; three children: daughter, Debbie Standifer; son, John Scott, Jr. and his wife Kristie; son, David Scott; eight grandchildren: Jenna Winegardner and her husband Tommy, Jared Curtin and his wife Lauren, Daphne Scott, Chaney Standifer, Carter Scott, Skylar Scott, Evan Scott and Piper Scott; three great-grandchildren: Knoxin Winegardner, Remington Curtin and Scottlyn Winegardner; three siblings: Kenneth Rogers and his wife Gloria; Phyllis Rogers, and Susan Rogers and her husband Stephen; and numerous, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2018 at Grace Brethren Church, 9870 Old Solomons Island Road, Owings, MD.
Burial in Southern Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 20, 2018; and 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the Lee Funeral Home, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD.
